Training Description

The Psychiatric Hospital Basic Training is intended to provide surveyors with the knowledge to conduct psychiatric hospital surveys and assess compliance with applicable Federal regulations and Medicare Conditions of Participation (CoPs). This training builds on previous trainings concerning surveying non-long term care facilities and hospitals in particular. This training is intended to develop surveyor proficiency with surveying psychiatric hospitals, especially in support of survey teams.

Training Objectives: On completion of this training, you will be able to identify:

  • State Operations Manual (SOM) Appendix A—Survey Protocol, Regulations and Interpretive Guidelines for Hospitals requirements that apply to psychiatric hospitals.
  • Activities you will complete while preparing to conduct surveys.
  • Processes and procedures you will use when surveying facilities.
  • Procedures you will use when conducting staff interviews.


Training Duration: 24 hours

Completion Requirements: This self-paced PHB Training includes a mandatory pretest, 3 learning modules, a mandatory posttest, and a CMS-approved training evaluation. Both the posttest and the evaluation must be completed to generate a certificate of completion. To pass the PHB Training, you must score a minimum of 80% on the course posttest.
