Training Name

Fundamentals of Patient Safety in Hospitals (FPS)

Activity Code

0CMSPATSAF_ONL_CEU

Training Description

This FPS training is intended to develop and foster surveyor knowledge of background information pertaining to hospital patient safety. Unlike other surveyor trainings, this training does not directly discuss regulations or CoPs for programs offered by CMS. This training content is not to be confused with or considered official CMS guidance. This training instead intends to provide context that will be helpful to surveyors when assessing compliance with the Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement CoP concerning quality assessment and patient safety. This training will be an essential support tool to the Hospital Basic Training.

Training Objectives: On completion of this training, you will be able to:

  • Identify concepts and principles fundamental to patient safety.
  • Recognize ways that hospitals translate those fundamentals into practice.
  • Identify and use web-based patient safety information resources.

Training Duration: 27 hours

Completion Requirements: This self-paced FPS training includes a mandatory pretest, four learning modules, a mandatory posttest, and a CMS-approved training evaluation. Both the posttest and the evaluation must be completed to generate a certificate of completion to earn training CEUs. To pass the FPS, you must score a minimum of 80% on the training posttest.

Email for Questions: The training is available on-demand online, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. For all technical issues and those requiring an urgent response, such as accessing the training, email helpdesk@qsep.org; for all content-related questions, email QSOG_Hospital@cms.hhs.gov.
