This training is designed to provide surveyors with knowledge and skills needed to survey hospitals, in cases involving EMTALA, in accordance with CMS regulations and requirements.

Training Objectives: On completion of this training, you will be able to:

  • Identify basic EMTALA requirements.
  • Determine the correct process for conducting an EMTALA survey.
  • Identify the appropriate regulation corresponding to a given complaint.
  • Determine an appropriate investigation approach.
  • Apply regulatory knowledge to complete simulated EMTALA investigations.


Training Duration: 16 hours

Completion Requirements: This self-paced EMTALA Basic Training includes a mandatory pretest, four learning modules, a mandatory posttest, and a CMS-approved training evaluation. The pretest, posttest, and evaluation must be completed to generate a certificate of completion to earn training continuing education units (CEUs). To pass the EMTALA Basic Training, you must score a minimum of 80 percent on the training posttest.
