About 19 million beneficiaries enrolled in Medicare in the first year of the program.
In 1972, Medicare coverage was extended to some people with disabilities under age 65 & those persons with permanent kidney failure. Two million new individuals subsequently enrolled in the program.
In 1980, coverage of home health services was broadened. Medicare supplemental insurance, also called "Medigap," was brought under Federal oversight. More than 28 million individuals were enrolled in Medicare.
In 2000, Medicare served 39 million seniors & disabled Americans.
It is estimated that by 2030, Medicare will serve an estimated 77 million Americans.
