This ASC Basic Training is intended to establish surveyor proficiency with the CMS requirements and regulations that apply to outpatient, or ambulatory, surgical centers (ASCs). This training will build on basic skills and knowledge for surveying non-long term care facilities and covers Conditions for Coverage (CfCs) and State Operations Manual Appendix L—Guidance for Surveyors: Ambulatory Surgical Centers. This training is for all current surveyors and reviewers and is intended to expand surveyor skills, representing a step toward becoming an independent surveyor.

Training Objectives: On completion of these lessons, you will be able to identify:

  • The definition of an ASC in the context of CMS regulations.
  • The initial tasks in the ASC survey process, including the tools used to conduct a survey and the roles of survey team members.
  • ASC regulations and the survey procedures to assess compliance with those regulations.
  • The final tasks in the ASC survey process, from conducting the final onsite surveyor meeting to preparing post-survey documentation.

Training Duration: 24 hours.

Completion Requirements: This self-paced training includes a mandatory pretest, two learning modules, a mandatory posttest, and a CMS-approved training evaluation. Both the posttest and evaluation must be completed to generate a certificate of completion and earn training continuing education units (CEUs). To pass the ASC Basic Training, you must score a minimum of 80% on the training posttest.
